It Started as a Tutorial
In 2019, Christian Akpan was completing his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posting in Ebonyi State, teaching at the Department of Computer Science at Ebonyi State University.
He saw a gap that anyone who has moved from academic study into a professional environment will recognise.
The students around him were learning theory. The industry outside was building products.
The distance between what the classroom taught and what an employer expected was wide enough to derail careers before they began.
He started gathering students and teaching them programming. Informally. House to house. In the department.
Not as a business, but as a response to something that bothered him.
By January 2020, what had started as voluntary tutorials had become Geekie I-Solutions Limited.
The company did not begin with a grand vision. It began with a founder who noticed a gap, filled it with his own time, and discovered that filling it kept generating more reasons to keep going.
Five years later, Geekie I-Solutions Limited has government sponsorship for field research, a formal license under Nigeria’s Startup Act, an invitation to exhibit at GITEX Nigeria, a Benue State government exhibition, television appearances, and a product that two pilot schools are currently evaluating for adoption.
The tutorial became a company. The company is now becoming a movement.
The Core Problem
Nigerian secondary schools manage most of their operational functions manually.
Results are processed by hand, transferred to paper, distributed through physical pin-based systems, and verified through processes that are vulnerable to manipulation and error.
Fee payments happen through bank queues or cash collections. Attendance is taken on paper registers that are difficult to compile into useful patterns.
Examination delivery in most schools has not yet transitioned to computer-based formats despite national policy moving in that direction.
Communication between schools and parents happens inconsistently, through notes, through phone calls, and through informal channels.
None of this is a technology problem in the sense that technology does not exist.
The problem is that the technology that exists was not built for Nigerian schools specifically, and schools themselves have historically lacked both the digital infrastructure and the institutional confidence to adopt it.
The founder’s five years of field research across 22 states made one thing clear. The need is uniform across the country.
The diversity is in the specific barriers. Large schools face different obstacles from small schools.
Government schools face different constraints from private schools.
The cultural resistance that met the original Career Aid Clinic in 2024, when teachers and administrators questioned whether AI could guide a student toward a secure future, is giving way to something different.
Schools are asking how to join. Not whether to.
The Strategic Decision Layer
The pivot from Career Aid Clinic to GPortal Suite is one of the most important strategic decisions in this company’s history and it was made for a reason that is worth examining carefully.
Career Aid Clinic was a single-use product. A secondary school student used it to receive AI-powered guidance on which subjects to prioritise for JAMB (Joint Admissions and matriculations Board) examinations, which university courses aligned with the job market, and which career paths were realistic given their profile.
The interaction was valuable. It was also, structurally, a one-time transaction.
The founder identified this as Nigeria-specific. He describes a cultural reality that single-benefit products face in the Nigerian market.
Once the benefit is delivered, the user has no reason to return. The product lifecycle ends at the moment of greatest value. Revenue cannot compound. Retention cannot build.
The decision to pivot was not driven by product failure. Career Aid Clinic worked. More than 300 students engaged.
Thirty paid cash for access. The pivot was driven by a precise diagnosis of why a working product could not become a sustainable business.
GPortal Suite is the answer to that diagnosis. Rather than offering a single benefit at a specific moment in a student’s journey, it offers a platform that schools need continuously, daily, across every operational function.
The school that adopts GPortal Suite does not use it once. It depends on it.
That shift from episodic value to embedded dependency is the commercial logic behind the pivot.
The product did not change what it was trying to do for Nigerian education. It changed the relationship structure through which it delivers that value.
The modular pricing architecture reinforces this. Schools subscribe for the features they need at the moment they can adopt them.
A school beginning its digital journey might start with result management and fee processing.
As confidence grows, attendance tracking and CBT examination delivery become the next additions. The platform grows with the institution rather than requiring full adoption upfront.
That sequencing reduces the barrier to first adoption, which in Nigerian institutional sales is frequently the decisive obstacle.
Ecosystem Context
The shift in Nigerian institutional attitudes toward educational technology is one of the most significant ecosystem observations in this transcript.
Five years ago, when Geekie I-Solutions Limited began its work, the response from schools and educators to AI integration was predominantly sceptical.
The question of whether a machine could counsel a child toward a secure future was not rhetorical.
It reflected a genuine cultural resistance to algorithmic guidance in domains historically understood as requiring human judgment and relationship.
That resistance has not disappeared. But it has moved. The founder describes governors mandating school digitalisation.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board transitioning its examinations to computer-based delivery.
The West African Examination Council beginning accreditation processes that effectively require schools to have CBT infrastructure.
The Federal Ministry of Education developing ICT integration frameworks. National television appearances generating enquiries from schools asking how to participate.
The regulatory tide in Nigerian education is moving in a direction that makes GPortal Suite not just useful but eventually necessary.
Schools that are not digitally compliant with emerging accreditation frameworks will lose standing.
Schools that do not offer CBT examination capability will fall behind their peers. Schools that cannot demonstrate structured data management will not attract certain categories of students or government support.
Geekie I-Solutions Limited is building the infrastructure that schools will need to meet those standards.
The founder is not selling a nice-to-have. He is building toward a position where his product becomes the compliance infrastructure of the sector.
Observed Patterns
The National Youth Service Corps posting that brought Christian Akpan to Ebonyi State University was not a deliberate market entry strategy.
It was a compulsory national programme. The gap he observed in the computer science department was not surfaced by market research.
It was surfaced by proximity. He was there, he saw it, and he responded to it with the resources he had available, which were his own knowledge and his own time.
That origin, building from observed need rather than from strategic analysis, tends to produce different kinds of products from those built by founders who identified a market opportunity and then went looking for the problem.
The founder’s subsequent decision to conduct 12 months of field research across 22 states, funded by TETFund, reflects the same instinct. He did not assume he understood the market. He went to verify it.
Open Variables
GPortal Suite is targeting a September 2026 launch aligned with the new academic session.
The primary constraint is operational cost, specifically the manpower required for product development refinement and the marketing expenses required to generate school adoption at scale.
Two pilot schools are in evaluation. Neither has yet committed to payment. The period between a school’s expression of interest and its first payment in institutional EdTech sales is typically the longest and least predictable part of the sales cycle.
Whether the September timeline holds and what the initial paid adoption numbers look like will determine the company’s commercial trajectory for the following 12 months more than any other single variable.
The founder describes the company as tech-heavy, with most team members coming from engineering and computer science backgrounds.
Building and managing a direct school outreach team requires a different skill set and a different hiring profile.
The plan to build this team is stated but the execution of that plan, including finding the right people and training them for institutional school sales in Nigeria’s various regional markets, is an open variable with real timeline pressure.
Why This Matters
For founders building EdTech in African markets, this case makes the most specific argument about the relationship between government-backed research and market credibility.
The TETFund sponsorship that enabled 12 months of field research across 22 states was not primarily valuable for the data it produced, though that data is real and useful.
It was valuable because it positioned Geekie I-Solutions Limited inside the government’s own understanding of the problem it was trying to solve.
A product developed with TETFund’s endorsement is not an outside product trying to sell into government-adjacent institutions.
It is a product that the institutional ecosystem already knows and has partly validated.
For investors, the Geekie I-Solutions Limited case represents a category of EdTech company that may take longer to evaluate than consumer-facing platforms but carries a different kind of defensibility.
The government relationships, the Startup Act license, the policy consultation inclusion, and the five years of institutional engagement are not assets that a faster-moving competitor can replicate quickly.
They were built through sustained presence and earned credibility over time.
Final Strategic Takeaway
Building technology that works for Nigerian secondary schools, with Nigerian internet reliability, Nigerian electricity infrastructure, Nigerian institutional procurement cycles, and a Nigerian cultural landscape that is moving from scepticism to adoption but has not yet arrived, is harder than building the same product for a more stable and more digitally mature environment.
The founder has been doing it for five years. He has not conquered Nigeria yet. He is not pretending otherwise.
What he has done is earn the right to try. Through research that the federal government sponsored.
Through relationships that national institutions recognise. Through a product that two schools are currently evaluating for real money.
Through a pivot that corrected a commercial model before it became a commercial failure.
